An old Mediterranean variety: pale colour, gentle tannins, a scent of red fruit and flowers. For centuries a team player in blends and a pillar of southern-French rosé, today it returns on its own too — from the old bush vines of the Cape to Chile's amphorae, and Puglia's Ottavianello.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Cinsault's heartland is still southern France — Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence and the southern Rhône — where it lends freshness to dry rosés and lightens reds alongside Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It is a late-ripening, drought-resistant vine that copes well with heat and the poor soils of the Mediterranean.
French colonial expansion carried it to North Africa and from there around the world. In South Africa it arrived under the name 'Hermitage': today the old bush vines of the Swartland turn out light yet surprisingly deep reds, while the historic vines of Chile's Itata and those of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley keep another memory of it. In Italy it lives mainly in Puglia, around Ostuni, under the name Ottavianello, often together with Negroamaro.
It is in Provence rosé that Cinsault is at its best. Warm, ventilated climate, poor schist and limestone soils, old bush vines: the pale colour, gentle tannins and scent of red fruit and flowers become the backbone of a dry, taut, food-friendly pink. On its own or with Grenache and Syrah, it shapes a style that has set the tone the world over.

Its most famous legacy doesn't bear its name. In 1925, in South Africa, Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsault — known there as 'Hermitage' — and obtained Pinotage, today the Cape's signature grape. The child became better known than the parent, yet without Cinsault it would not exist.
