Pinotage

South African crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, created in 1924 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold at Stellenbosch University.

Born in a laboratory and turned into a flag, Pinotage is South Africa's signature grape: a child of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, it gives reds of deep colour, dark fruit and a smoky stamp. Long divisive, today it shows its best face in the Cape's old vines.

Il carattereThe character

ColoreColour
Deep ruby to garnet, often near-opaque when young.
NasoNose
Intense: blackberry, plum and black cherry, with hints of smoke, earth and spice; in modern styles coffee and chocolate emerge.
BoccaPalate
Full-bodied, fairly tannic — the tannin turning velvety in the best examples — fresh enough to carry the ripe fruit, warm and of good length.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Piccole piantagioni esistono negli Stati Uniti, in Nuova Zelanda, in Brasile, in Zimbabwe e in Israele. Pinotage is almost exclusively South African: it covers a slice of the Western Cape's vineyards and gives its best results in Stellenbosch, its cradle, in the old bush-vine Swartland, in Paarl and Wellington. Small plantings exist in the United States, New Zealand, Brazil, Zimbabwe and Israel. It favours warm, well-drained sites, where full ripeness softens its tannin.

La migliore espressioneWhere it shines
Western Cape

It is the grape's cradle and remains its benchmark: old bush vines on granitic soils, strong day–night swings and a mature winemaking school give Pinotage of deep fruit, firm tannin and the ability to age.

Rosso fermo in purezzaDry varietal red
The classic form: vinified on its own and oak-aged, it gives full-bodied reds with firm tannin and dark fruit.
Cape BlendCape Blend
A South African blend where Pinotage sets the stamp; by convention it makes up 30% to 70%, often alongside Bordeaux varieties or Shiraz.
Stile «caff軫Coffee» style
A modern reading built on marked coffee, mocha and chocolate notes from heavy toasting: a commercial hit and highly divisive.
Rosato, fortificato e spumanteRosé, fortified and sparkling
Espressioni di nicchia: rosati freschi, versioni fortificate in stile Porto e, raramente, spumanti rossi.Niche expressions: fresh rosés, fortified port-style versions and, rarely, red sparkling wines.

A tavolaAt the table

A wine for hearty food. It shines with the braai, the South African barbecue, and with grilled and smoked meats, where the wine's smoky notes meet those of the coals. It stands up to game and spiced stews such as bobotie, and it goes with lamb and aged hard cheeses.

CuriositàDid you know

The name joins «Pinot» to «Hermitage», as Cinsaut was then called in South Africa: Pinotage. Perold made the cross in 1924, but the first wine came only in 1941, at Elsenburg; the first bottle to carry the Pinotage name on its label was the 1959-vintage Lanzerac, released in 1961. Once dismissed for certain smoky excesses, the grape has won, over recent decades, respect, a dedicated association and an annual award that crowns its best interpretations.

A characteristic, recurring profile of the grape, not the tasting of a specific vintage: style and quality vary a great deal from winery to winery.
