Hermitage: la collina che non si affrettaHermitage: the hill that does not hurry

One hundred and thirty-seven terraced hectares on granite, a single south-facing slope above the Rhône: Hermitage is one of Europe's smallest and most legendary vineyards. Here Syrah leaves exuberance behind and becomes mineral tension, austere tannin, and a promise of greatness measured in decades.

In colour Hermitage rouge is deep, consistent ruby red with purple hints when young; it shifts to garnet with orange glints after several years in bottle. On the nose it is intense and complex: blackberry, blueberry and black olive in the foreground, over a spicy backdrop of black pepper and a hint of dried violet; with age, tertiary notes of tar, leather and tobacco emerge. On the palate it is dry, fairly warm and soft, fresh and savoury, with tight, gripping tannin in youth that softens beautifully over time; robust structure, a very persistent finish. Young it is ready but closed: full expression arrives after ten years or more.

The hill of Hermitage rises on the left bank of the Rhône, above the town of Tain-l'Hermitage in the Drôme département. The name comes from Gaspard de Stérimberg, a knight who, returning from the 13th-century Crusades, chose this height as a spiritual retreat — hence «hermitage», a hermit's dwelling. The soil tells two stories: granite at the top, giving Syrah nerve and mineral tension; clay with pebbles lower down, where the fruit grows richer and fleshier. The northerly wind, which sweeps the slope regularly, dries excess moisture and keeps the vines in a productive tension that translates into concentration. In the 19th century Hermitage was so prized that it was used to bolster wines from other regions. Today it remains one of the world's most age-worthy and sought-after reds: it asks for time, but rewards those who wait with everything.

A tavolaAt the table

Robust structure and austere tannin: Hermitage calls for substantial, flavourful dishes, and a glass wide enough to let it breathe. Perfect with herb-roasted lamb, with pigeon and feathered game in a dark jus, with char-grilled côte de bœuf and its caramelised juices, and with a hard, long-aged cheese that counterweights its tannin and savoury backbone.

Hermitage rouge is proof that Syrah, on the right terroir, needs to do nothing to impress: all it needs is time. It is a benchmark for understanding a great age-worthy red — not an everyday wine, but an experience worth seeking out. A wine to buy young, lay down and forget for at least a decade; then open, and let it surprise you.
