Petit Verdot

Bordeaux, on the banks of the Gironde: one of the historic red grapes of the Médoc.

Bordeaux's 'little green one': a black grape that ripens very late, still green on the vine when the others are already ready. When the sun brings it to full ripeness it gives dense colour, a scent of violet, spice and firm tannin. That is why it was long above all a blending grape, the note of colour and backbone in Bordeaux reds; today, in warm climates, it is increasingly made on its own too.

Il carattereThe character

ColoreColour
Deep, almost impenetrable ruby, with violet glints when young.
NasoNose
Violet and ripe black fruit — blackberry, plum — over a spicy base of black pepper, liquorice and a balsamic hint.
BoccaPalate
Full and structured, with a firm tannin still restless when young that the years soften; good freshness and a long, spicy finish.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Petit Verdot was born in Bordeaux, on both banks of the Gironde, where it is one of the historic red grapes of the Médoc. Precisely because it ripens very late, in cooler Bordeaux vintages it risks never reaching full ripeness: that is why there it almost always plays a small part in blends, adding colour, spice and structure rather than taking the lead.

It truly comes into its own in warm, sunny climates, where the long season lets it ripen all the way. In Australia — above all in McLaren Vale — it has found a second home and gives powerful, long-lived varietal reds; it is also making headway in California, Spain, Argentina and even the Peruvian desert.

In Italy it has settled on the Tyrrhenian coast: the Maremma and the Bolgheri area, where sun, sea breeze and dry vineyards suit its late ripening. It also grows well in Sicily, in Lazio and in the South, where the heat brings it to full ripeness: here, alongside the blends, varietal versions turn up more and more often.

La migliore espressioneWhere it shines
Toscana

Such a late grape needs sun and a long season to ripen right through, without staying green. Tuscany's Tyrrhenian coast offers exactly that: bright days, a sea breeze that dries the bunches, lean soils. Here Petit Verdot stops being a mere ingredient in the blend and becomes a red in its own right — dark, spicy, with a ripe tannin that is no longer green.

Its oldest, most classic role: a small share alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, to which it adds colour, spice and tannic backbone. Little in quantity, a lot in signature.
In purezzaAs a varietal
In warm climates it becomes a dark, spicy, structured single-variety red, often oak-aged to tame the tannin: austere when young, it unwinds with a few years.

A tavolaAt the table

A red with this structure calls for hearty dishes. Its firm tannin, softened by savoury, juicy meats, is at its best with a rare steak, a braise, roast lamb or game.

When young, with that tannin still lively, it suits the grill and meat sauces; with a few more years, as it softens, it goes with roasts, spiced stews and hard aged cheeses. Its spicy streak also sits well beside dishes fragrant with pepper and aromatic herbs.

CuriositàDid you know

The name says it all: petit verdot, 'little green one', for its tiny berries and for the fact that they stay green a long time, since the grape ripens very late. For centuries it was the despair of Bordeaux growers, who in cool years watched it fail to ripen.

A warmer climate and the conquest of the New World's sunny terroirs have given it a comeback: from a blending supporting act it has become, where the sun is plentiful, a grape that yields characterful single-variety reds. That late ripening, a worry on the Gironde, becomes a virtue in warm climates: long, bright seasons bring it to full ripeness, and the varietal red gains from it.
