The red of softness. Merlot won the world over because it is generous and immediate: dark-fruit flesh, velvety tannins and a round, easy drink that pleases everyone — yet it keeps real depth when it grows on the right soils.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
In Bordeaux it is the most-planted red grape and the heart of the right-bank reds. But Merlot is now cosmopolitan: from Chile to California, from Eastern Europe to South Africa. In Italy it put down deep roots above all in the North-East — Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Trentino, where it arrived back in the nineteenth century — and on the Tuscan coast, between Bolgheri and Suvereto, in the Maremma, where it gives some of its most intense expressions; further inland, in the Valdichiana near Arezzo, at Cortona.
On the compact clays of Pomerol, Merlot finds its ideal balance: the soil is cool and slow to warm, and the water it holds carries the vine along without rushing it; so the early-ripening fruit arrives full yet never heavy. The result is velvety, deep, long-lived reds — the archetype of what this grape can give.

A tavolaAt the table
A wine made for the table — versatile and convivial. Its velvety tannins and full body go with roasts and beef braises, while its soft texture sits well with a mushroom risotto or grilled red meats. The more structured, oak-aged versions pair well with aged cheeses of medium intensity and game birds.

For centuries the parents of Merlot were a mystery. Only in 2009 did DNA analysis, led by ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot, reveal its mother: Magdeleine Noire des Charentes, a nearly extinct variety found by chance on a few vines in western France. The father is Cabernet Franc — which makes Merlot a half-sibling of Cabernet Sauvignon.
