One glass is enough to know it: apricot, peach and white flowers that seem to step out of a perfume. Viognier is the great aromatic white of the northern Rhône — soft, warm, full-bodied — and it carries a story worthy of a novel, because half a century ago it had all but vanished.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Viognier's home is the northern Rhône Valley, on the steep granite hills around Condrieu, where it ripens in the sun and yields full, perfumed wines. From there it spread across France — above all Languedoc, today its largest planted area — and then around the world: California, South Africa and Australia, where the Eden Valley has become a second home for it. In Italy it stays a niche grape: grown mostly in Tuscany, Sicily and Puglia and has no denomination of its own. Many single-varietal bottles are labelled as IGT, but some DOCs allow the varietal too: the Sicilia DOC production code permits the grape name on the label. Curiously, its most famous role is alongside a red: in Côte-Rôtie a small share of Viognier is fermented together with Syrah to perfume it and fix its colour.
This is where Viognier shines: 100% Viognier, on steep south-facing terraces of granite rock. Condrieu is dry yet opulent, with the grape's signature yellow fruit and flowers and a velvety softness. It is the yardstick against which every Viognier in the world is measured.

A tavolaAt the table
A full, perfumed wine, it asks for dishes of equal character. It is lovely with spiced but not spicy cooking — a mild curry, chicken with sweet spices — and with fruit-based dishes, like pork with apricot or duck with orange. Good too on fish in a creamy sauce and on soft cheeses; in the sweet versions, on foie gras. Serve it cool but not cold, around 10-12 °C, so the aromas open up.

CuriositàDid you know
In the 1960s Viognier came close to disappearing: Condrieu had shrunk to a handful of hectares and few still believed in it. Its recovery, led first and foremost by Georges Vernay, brought it back to today's vineyards and then across much of the world. Legend has it that it arrived from Dalmatia with the Roman emperor Probus, but that is a fine story more than a documented fact. A curiosity within the curiosity: Château-Grillet is one of the smallest denominations in France — a little over three hectares, an appellation that coincides with a single estate.
Typical, recurring profile of the grape, not a tasting of a single vintage.
