On the Castilian plateau, where the Duero cuts through a hard land of clay and limestone at eight hundred metres, Tempranillo changes name and character: here it is Tinta del País, giving reds of dense colour, black fruit and spice, powerful yet held in balance by the freshness of altitude. Ribera del Duero is one of Spain's great homes of the red built to age.

You climb onto the plateau of northern Castile and the landscape turns severe: bare tablelands between 750 and 850 metres, the Duero crossing them from east to west, hot days and cold nights, harsh winters. It is an extreme continental climate, and the wide swing between day and night is the region's secret: it brings the grapes to full ripeness while preserving the acidity that keeps the wines fresh. On poor soils of clay, limestone and sand, Tempranillo has developed a biotype all its own, which growers have long called Tinta del País or Tinto Fino: thick skin, deep colour, black fruit and structure. Vines have followed the river for centuries — underground cellars were being dug at Aranda de Duero back in the Middle Ages — yet the appellation is young, recognised only in 1982. Fame came first through Vega Sicilia, founded in 1864 and soon the monument of Spanish wine; then, through the 1980s and 1990s, a new generation of wineries carried Ribera del Duero beyond Spain's borders. Today the appellation brings together hundreds of wineries — from the historic great names to small family estates — all working the same severe plateau of intense sun and cold nights: it is this variety of hands, on the same extreme terroir, that gives the local Tempranillo its full range of styles, from young, fruity reds to great wines built for long ageing. Compared with the Tempranillo of neighbouring Rioja, leaner and more elegant, here the same grape gives darker, warmer and more powerful reds — without losing the tension that altitude grants.

A tavolaAt the table

A full-bodied red, warm and firmly tannic, with the freshness that altitude brings: it calls for savoury, hearty dishes — roasts, grilled meats, aged cheeses — that its structure accompanies and its freshness lightens.

A Castilian red where the power of the continental sun and the freshness of the plateau stand together: full, warm and deep, with tannin that settles over the years. One to open with a winter roast; the more structured versions can wait a few years in the cellar.
