Tempranillo

The name comes from the Spanish «temprano», meaning early: Tempranillo ripens before almost every other red grape on the Iberian Peninsula. A native Spanish variety documented for centuries, genetic studies point to a natural cross between Albillo Mayor and Benedicto.

It is the red soul of Spain: the grape that gives structure and longevity to the great Riojas and the powerful Ribera del Dueros. A thick-skinned variety that spends years in oak without tiring, with dark fruit that ages into leather, tobacco and earth.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Tempranillo is the most widely planted red grape in Spain, covering much of the north-centre: Rioja and Ribera del Duero above all, then Toro, Navarra, La Mancha and Valdepeñas, as far as Catalonia. It loves continental climates and altitude, which bring strong day-to-night temperature swings: by day it ripens the sugars, by night it keeps freshness and aroma. In Portugal it is at home as Tinta Roriz or Aragonez, in the Douro, the Dão and the Alentejo; beyond Europe it turns up in Argentina, Australia and the United States. In Italy it is a negligible presence: it remains, first of all, the grape of Spain.

Spagna · Rioja

It is in Rioja that Tempranillo wrote its history. The vineyards of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, between 400 and 600 metres, blend the Atlantic breath descending from the Cantabrian mountains with continental warmth, on clay-limestone soils. But the signature lies above all in the cellar: long ageing in oak — traditionally American — polishes the tannins and brings that vein of vanilla and leather that makes a Rioja recognisable blind.

A tavolaAt the table

Tempranillo is made for the table. Its tannic grip and body call for savoury, hearty dishes: roast lamb — the classic Rioja pairing — grilled meats and beef stews. A young Crianza suits cured meats such as Iberian ham; the more evolved Reservas and Gran Reservas stand up to hard cheeses like Manchego and to game.

CuriositàDid you know

Few grapes carry as many names as Tempranillo: depending on the area it becomes Tinto Fino or Tinta del País in Ribera del Duero, Cencibel in La Mancha, Tinta de Toro in Toro, Ull de Llebre in Catalonia, and in Portugal Tinta Roriz or Aragonez. The same grape, renamed by every land that made it its own.

The profile described is the typical, recurring character of Tempranillo, not the tasting of a single vintage or label: styles and ageing vary widely from one winery to another.
