Today Timorasso is one of Italy's most sought-after whites for those who want structure and longevity. In the Colli Tortonesi, where it goes by the name «Derthona», it gives a full-bodied wine of vibrant acidity that, with age, takes on honey and mineral nuances.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Timorasso is a grape of tiny geography: it lives almost only in the Colli Tortonesi, the south-eastern corner of Piedmont around Tortona, where the region meets Lombardy, Emilia and Liguria. Its hills unfold across the Curone, Grue, Ossona and Borbera valleys, on soils of calcareous-clay marl locally called «terre bianche» (white earths). These are cool, breezy slopes with marked day-night temperature swings: conditions that yield ripe yet nervy grapes, the raw material of a savoury, long-lived white. Beyond this small patch of land, Timorasso remains a rarity.
It is here, on the «terre bianche» — the pale, calcareous marls of the Tortona valleys — that Timorasso finds its balance: a full-bodied white of great acid tension, able to age for years. The production rules ask for at least 95% Timorasso and ten months' rest before release: the time a wine born to last truly needs. «Derthona» is the name the Consorzio and the growers use for this white — the amendment proposed by the Piedmont Region in 2024 would turn it into a sub-zone on three levels, all from unblended Timorasso.

Structure and marked acidity make Timorasso a true food white, not just an aperitif. Its freshness and savouriness accompany rich fish dishes and shellfish, mixed fries and risottos; it sits well with white meats and vitello tonnato, and stands up to medium-aged cheeses such as Montébore, a speciality of the Tortona area. With a few years in bottle, and its more mature nuances, it gladly takes on spiced cooking too.
CuriositàDid you know
The name Derthona often used for this wine is simply the ancient Roman name of Tortona: a tribute to the area's roots. But the most surprising story is a recent one. By the mid-20th century Timorasso had all but vanished, replaced by easier, more productive grapes; only a few scattered vines remained. It was brought back to life from the 1980s by a grower from Monleale, Walter Massa, who believed in a grape everyone had abandoned — the first vintage vinified unblended dates to 1987. Today that «forgotten wine» is one of Italy's most sought-after whites for its ability to age.
