A rare red grape from the Marche back-country, kept alive on the hills of Serrapetrona. From here comes one of Italy's most distinctive sparkling reds: scented with dark fruit and violet, its bubbles born from grapes left to dry.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Vernaccia Nera is an almost entirely homegrown grape: it lives on the hills of Serrapetrona and, in part, in the neighbouring municipalities of Belforte del Chienti and San Severino Marche, inland from Macerata. These are the Marche Apennines, some sixty kilometres from the Adriatic, on slopes between 400 and 700 metres, with marl-limestone soils and a high-hill climate — cool and rainy, with annual averages below 14 °C. These conditions stretch out ripening; the drying comes later, in the cold months.
Beyond this small pocket of land, Vernaccia Nera is a rarity. The isolation of the valleys protected it and tied it tightly to a single place: it is one of those grapes that survive because a community kept growing them, rather than out of convenience.
This is where Vernaccia Nera shines: in the sparkling red of Serrapetrona, where a large share of the grapes is left to dry and the wine goes through three successive fermentations. The result is a dark, fragrant, vibrant sparkler that stands apart among Italy's sparkling reds.

The sweet sparkler is at its best at the end of a meal. It is lovely with the area's dry, nutty desserts — ring cake, almond biscuits, dried figs — and with fruit tart: the wine's sweetness goes hand in hand with the dessert, while the bubbles lighten every bite. Try it, too, with a blue cheese: here the sugar and freshness stand up to the cheese's bold flavour.
The dry version plays a different part and becomes a red for the aperitivo and for cured meats. It is perfect with ciauscolo and Marche salami, with fried nibbles and a pizza: the lively acidity and the bubbles refresh the palate with every sip.
The still red, finally, is a wine to drink with a meal: grilled meats, roast pork, aged pecorino. Full-bodied, with its tannin softened by the months of ageing, it stands up to savoury dishes without tiring.

Its signature is a rare method: part of the harvest is left to dry and the wine goes through three fermentations before it turns sparkling. Few Italian reds are born this way: a small textbook case of wine tied to its place.
A stubborn misunderstanding surrounds the name. 'Vernaccia' is a generic term — from the Latin for 'local vine' — and implies no kinship: Vernaccia Nera has nothing to do with Vernaccia di San Gimignano or Vernaccia di Oristano, two white grapes with entirely different stories. Its relationship with Grenache — the grape behind Sardinia's Cannonau — is instead debated: the bunches look very much alike and some analyses bring it close to Grenache, while Italy's National Register keeps it as a variety of its own. A question still open.
