Il Verdicchio è il grande bianco delle Marche, e uno dei bianchi italiani che invecchiano meglio. Dal riflesso verdolino che gli dà il nome nasce un vino teso e sapido, di fiori bianchi e mela verde, con quel finale ammandorlato che è la sua firma. Ha due case a poche colline di distanza: i più ampi Castelli di Jesi, verso l'Adriatico, e la valle interna di Matelica.Verdicchio is the great white of the Marche, and one of the Italian whites that age best. From the greenish tint that gives it its name comes a taut, saline wine of white flowers and green apple, with that almond finish that is its signature. It has two homes a few hills apart: the broader Castelli di Jesi, towards the Adriatic, and the inland valley of Matelica.

I Castelli di Jesi si allargano sulle colline tra Jesi e l'entroterra di Ancona, aperte all'influenza dell'Adriatico: è l'areale più esteso e conosciuto, con il cuore storico della sottozona Classico. Matelica, poche colline più a sud-ovest, è l'unica denominazione del Verdicchio interamente dell'entroterra: una valle chiusa dove le forti escursioni fra il giorno e la notte danno vini più tesi e affilati. Piccole quantità crescono anche altrove nelle Marche e in Umbria.Verdicchio's homeland is the Marche, where it occupies two neighbouring but different zones. Castelli di Jesi spreads over the hills between Jesi and the Ancona hinterland, open to the Adriatic: the largest and best-known area, with the historic Classico heart. Matelica, a few hills to the south-west, is the only fully inland Verdicchio denomination — an enclosed valley where the wide day-night temperature swings give tauter, sharper wines. Small amounts also grow elsewhere in the Marche and in Umbria.

The Classico sub-zone and above all the Riserva — raised to DOCG as Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva — proved what had long been overlooked: that this white can age fifteen years and more, gaining complexity without losing its acid backbone. Matelica, close by, gives the tautest read; but it was from Jesi that its renown set out.

Nato in riva all'Adriatico, il Verdicchio è un compagno naturale del pesce. La sua acidità taglia il fritto di paranza e le olive all'ascolana ripiene di carne, e invita al boccone successivo; la sapidità allunga il finale sul brodetto di pesce e sugli spaghetti con le vongole. Le versioni più strutturate, Superiore e Riserva, accompagnano anche il coniglio in porchetta e i formaggi di media stagionatura.Born by the Adriatic, Verdicchio is a natural partner for fish. Its acidity cuts through fried paranza and meat-stuffed olive all'ascolana, inviting the next bite; its salinity lengthens the finish on fish brodetto and spaghetti with clams. The more structured versions, Superiore and Riserva, also work with rabbit cooked porchetta-style and medium-aged cheeses.

Sotto nomi diversi è la stessa uva che troviamo altrove in Italia: gli studi genetici hanno confermato che il Verdicchio coincide con il Trebbiano di Soave del Veronese e con la Turbiana (o Trebbiano di Lugana) del Garda — pur restando iscritti come varietà distinte nel Registro nazionale. È invece un'altra uva rispetto al più diffuso Trebbiano Toscano, con cui condivide solo il nome di famiglia. La sua fortuna moderna passò da una bottiglia: l'anfora verde disegnata dall'architetto Maiocchi per Fazi Battaglia negli anni Cinquanta lo rese un successo nazionale, ma lo marchiò a lungo come vino da trattoria — una fama che le grandi Riserve hanno poi ribaltato.Under different names it is the same grape found elsewhere in Italy: genetic studies have confirmed that Verdicchio coincides with Trebbiano di Soave from the Verona area and with Turbiana (or Trebbiano di Lugana) from Lake Garda — even though they remain listed as distinct varieties in the national register. It is instead a different grape from the far more common Trebbiano Toscano, with which it shares only the family name. Its modern fortune ran through a bottle: the green amphora designed by the architect Maiocchi for Fazi Battaglia in the 1950s made it a national success, but long branded it as a trattoria wine — a reputation the great Riserve later overturned.
