It is one of the mountain whites that symbolise northern Italy: it smells of flowers and citrus, quenches thirst and never tires the palate. Born in a laboratory almost a century and a half ago and long planted everywhere for its generosity, Müller-Thurgau shows its finest side only at altitude, where the cold Alpine air lends it nerve and finesse.

Dove cresceWhere it grows
Its homeland is Germany, where for a long stretch of the twentieth century it was the most planted white grape: here it gives soft, fragrant wines, often for early drinking, and travels under the name Rivaner. From there it spread across cool Europe — Austria, Luxembourg, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, England — and crossed the oceans to New Zealand, where it was long called Riesling-Sylvaner.
In Italy its heart beats in the mountains of Trentino-Alto Adige. In the high vineyards of Val di Cembra, in Trentino, and of the Valle Isarco, in Alto Adige, it shares the slopes with Sylvaner and Kerner: cold nights, wide day-to-night swings and poor porphyry soils stretch out the ripening and keep the acidity alive. It is the landscape that suits it best.
At altitude, on the cold terraces of the Valle Isarco, Müller-Thurgau stops being an easy wine and becomes a white of precision: taut, mineral, with that scent of mountain flowers that lowland heat would flatten. It is here, well above 500 metres and up to far more extreme heights, that it gives its most serious versions, able to hold a few years in the bottle.

Its freshness and citrus note make it a natural aperitif and a companion to lake and sea dishes: trout in butter, a light fish fry, sea bass carpaccio. Its nimble drinkability goes just as easily with vegetable starters, asparagus and egg dishes.
In the mountains it marries local flavours: thinly sliced speck, canederli dumplings, fresh and lightly aged cheeses. Its perfume also makes it a happy choice with the more delicate side of Asian cooking, from sushi to gently spiced dishes.

CuriositàDid you know
For over a century Müller-Thurgau was believed to be a cross of Riesling and Silvaner — professor Müller thought so himself, and that is where the old Swiss name Riesling-Silvaner comes from. Then, in the late 1990s, DNA analysis overturned the story: the father is not Silvaner but an almost forgotten grape, Madeleine Royale. The mother is still Riesling.
Its creator, Hermann Müller, came from the Swiss canton of Thurgau — the very name that stayed with the grape. He made the crossing at Geisenheim, in Germany, looking for a variety that would ripen early and yield generously: mission accomplished, so much so that for decades it was planted everywhere. Its revenge in quality, though, came where no one expected it: high up in the mountains.
