Among the many grapes that carry the name ‘Malvasia’, the Istrian one stands apart. Born on the Istrian peninsula, poised between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is not related to the aromatic Malvasias found elsewhere in Italy: it is a white that speaks softly — floral yet restrained, saline, with that bitter-almond finish that gives it away on the first sip. In Friuli it has been at home for centuries, and in the Collio and on the Carso it finds its fullest shape.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Malvasia Istriana was born and grows around the Gulf of Trieste: the Istrian peninsula — today split between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy — is its homeland. In Croatia, where it is called Malvazija Istarska, it is the most planted white of Istria; on the Italian side it has put down deep roots in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where it is one of the white grapes most bound up with this border.
Two terroirs bring out its best. In the Collio the ponca soils — flaky marl and sandstone — and the Adriatic breeze give it finesse and drive, in the company of grapes such as Ribolla Gialla and Friulano. On the Trieste Carso, instead, the thin red soil over limestone rock and the bora wind that dries the bunches yield a more textured, mineral Malvasia, often fermented on the skins alongside Vitovska.
On the gravelly plain of the Friuli Isonzo it gives broader, riper wines, while across the border, in Slovenian Istria and the Vipava valley, it remains a benchmark grape. Everywhere, it is a white that tastes of sea and stone more than of fruit.
It is in the Collio that Malvasia Istriana finds balance and finesse: the ponca hills, the air rising from the Adriatic and the strong day-to-night swings give it clean white-flower aromas, freshness and a long, saline finish. Wines of real breeding, among the most elegant whites of Friuli.

A tavolaAt the table
Malvasia Istriana was born for the seafood table of the Adriatic. Its freshness and saline trail cleanse the palate after fried fish or a plate of langoustines, and go naturally with raw seafood or marinated anchovies. On that almond-tinged finish, try an upper-Adriatic fish soup, brodetto.
But it is also the white of its own land: it pairs beautifully with San Daniele prosciutto, an asparagus and egg salad, fresh and medium-aged cheeses. The amber, skin-macerated Carso version, more tannic, calls for bolder dishes — white meats, stuffed vegetables, an aged Montasio.

The name ‘Malvasia’ comes from Monemvasia, the Greek port from which, in the Middle Ages, Venice traded prized sweet wines: over time the label came to cover dozens of different, unrelated grapes across the Mediterranean. The Istrian one is one of them — it carries that old trade name, yet it is a variety all of its own, native to Istria. So bound to its land that Istrian growers have even dedicated a purpose-designed glass to it, to bring out its restrained aromas: few grapes can say the same.
