Il Lagrein ama il caldo e i suoli profondi. Il suo cuore è la conca di Bolzano — il quartiere di Gries, i pendii di Bozner Leiten, la piana verso Ora — dove i conoidi ghiaiosi e sabbiosi del Talvera e dell'Isarco accumulano il calore del giorno, mentre le notti fresche che scendono dai monti tengono viva l'acidità. È coltivato anche nel vicino Trentino, lungo la piana dell'Adige, e in quantità marginali fuori dall'Italia. Appartiene a una famiglia tutta alpina: gli studi genetici lo dicono nato dall'incrocio fra Teroldego e Schiava e fratello del Marzemino; e attraverso il Teroldego — fratello della Dureza, genitore del Syrah — è un lontano cugino del Syrah del Rodano.Lagrein loves warmth and deep soils. Its heartland is the Bolzano basin — the Gries quarter, the Bozner Leiten slopes, the plain towards Ora — where the gravelly, sandy alluvial fans of the Talvera and Isarco store the day's heat, while the cool nights coming down from the mountains keep acidity alive. It is also grown in nearby Trentino, along the Adige plain, and in marginal amounts outside Italy. It belongs to a thoroughly alpine family: genetic studies make it a natural cross of Teroldego and Schiava and a sibling of Marzemino; and through Teroldego — sibling of Dureza, a parent of Syrah — it is a distant cousin of Rhône Syrah.

The warm, gravelly, deep soils at the foot of the town give wines of deep colour, full body and noble tannin; the label «Lagrein di Gries» — Grieser Lagrein in German — is reserved by the appellation to these historic vineyards. The Riserva versions, aged at least two years, show how far it can go: structure, chocolate, spice and a staying power that defies the decades.
