Blaufränkisch

Europa centrale · il grande rosso del Burgenland austriacoCentral Europe · Austria's great red from Burgenland

There is a red from Central Europe that holds dark fruit, black pepper and a nervy acidity together like few others: Blaufränkisch. It ripens late, colours deeply and gives wines of tension, with a nimble palate that can also age. It is the flagship grape of Austria's Burgenland, yet it travels under many names — Lemberger in Germany, Kékfrankos in Hungary, Franconia in Friuli — and it is a half-sibling of Gamay, both children of the old Gouais blanc.

Il carattereThe character

ColoreColour
Deep ruby with violet glints when young, turning to garnet over the years.
ProfumiAromas
Intense and fruit-driven: blackberry, morello cherry and blackcurrant, a clear streak of black pepper and spice; with age come forest floor and an iron, almost graphite note.
BoccaPalate
Fresh and savoury, with firm tannin — angular when young, then velvety — medium to full-bodied and long on the finish. It is the lively acidity that keeps the palate taut even in the more structured wines.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Blaufränkisch's home is Burgenland, the strip of Austrian land squeezed between Lake Neusiedl and the Hungarian border, where the continental heat of the Pannonian plain ripens fully a grape that buds early and ripens late. Here the variety shows three faces according to the soil: the deep clays of Mittelburgenland — the "Blaufränkischland" — give powerful, dark wines; the limestone of the Leithaberg, on the heights west of the lake, brings finesse and a fine weave; the iron-rich green schist of Eisenberg, in the south, signs taut, mineral, peppery bottles.

From there Blaufränkisch spreads across Central Europe, often under other names. In Hungary it is the Kékfrankos of Sopron and Villány, and one of the grapes of Bikavér, the "bull's blood"; in Germany it is the Lemberger of Württemberg; then Frankovka in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Modra frankinja in Slovenia, Borgonja in Croatia. Across the ocean, as Lemberger, it has found a home in Washington State and New York's Finger Lakes, where it looks for coolness.

In Italy it is called Franconia and lives mainly in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, on the gravelly soils of the Isonzo and the Grave, where it gives fragrant, nimble reds. For its tannic weave and pepper some liken it, in style, to Syrah; for its taut acidity and its not-impenetrable colour, to certain Nebbiolo — a comparison of character, not of kinship.

La migliore espressioneWhere it shines
Mittelburgenland (Blaufränkischland)
Burgenland, Austria

In Mittelburgenland, Blaufränkisch is so at home that the area calls itself "Blaufränkischland", the land of Blaufränkisch. The deep clays hold water and heat, and with the hot summer of the Pannonian plain they bring this late variety to full ripeness: the wines are dense, deeply coloured and firmly structured, yet kept alive by the grape's acidity. It is the benchmark for power; for limestone finesse look to the Leithaberg, for taut pepper to the iron-rich schist of Eisenberg. The finest bottles carry the name of a single vineyard — the "Ried" — and ask for a few years to unwind their tannin.

A tavolaAt the table

Blaufränkisch's lively acidity and firm tannin call for savoury, juicy dishes. With the fresh, peppery versions — the young, unoaked ones — a board of cured meats, roast pork, goulash or a grilled sausage all work well. The denser single-vineyard bottles go with game — venison and wild boar — duck and grilled red meats. And with aged mountain cheeses its freshness cleans the palate of the fat, bite after bite.

CuriositàDid you know

The name tells a small paradox. "Fränkisch", that is "Frankish", in old German ampelography did not mark an origin but a judgement: it was the label reserved for noble, quality grapes, as opposed to "Heunisch" ("Hunnic"), the term for common varieties. And yet one of these very "Heunisch" grapes — Gouais blanc, in German Weißer Heunisch — is one of its two parents, together with the rare Blaue Zimmettraube. The most recent genetic studies place its cradle in Lower Styria, today in Slovenia, at the heart of the old Habsburg empire.

Documented under this name in Vienna in 1862 and made official at Colmar in 1875, Blaufränkisch is in turn an important parent: in 1922, at Klosterneuburg, Fritz Zweigelt crossed it with Sankt Laurent to obtain Zweigelt, today the most-planted red in Austria.
