Aglianico

Italia meridionale · Campania e BasilicataSouthern Italy · Campania and Basilicata

Sui suoli vulcanici dell'Irpinia e del Vulture firma vini austeri e longevi, che molti chiamano «il Barolo del Mezzogiorno».One of the South's great reds: dense tannins, vivid acidity and a patience that asks for years in bottle. On the volcanic soils of Irpinia and Vulture it makes austere, long-lived wines that many call “the Barolo of the South”.

Dove cresceWhere it grows

Aglianico is the red of southern Italy: its homeland is Campania and Basilicata, with outposts in Molise and Puglia. It loves volcanic soils and high ground — the Irpinian plateau around Taurasi and the slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano — where wide day-night temperature swings and one of Italy's latest harvests (well into October, sometimes November) lend it acidity and perfume. Soil, altitude and time: here you wait for the grapes to be ready, not the other way round.

Campania · Irpinia

The South's first DOCG (1993), Taurasi is born on the hills of the Avellino province, on clay-limestone and volcanic soils. Altitude and temperature swings refine the tannins; the long mandatory ageing — at least three years, four for the Riserva — turns youthful austerity into depth. It is the proving ground where Aglianico shows its full stature.

The main voice: long ageing in wood and bottle, for wines that ask for patience and reward it over the years (Taurasi, Aglianico del Vulture Superiore).
Even longer ageing — Taurasi Riserva is released after four years — for the most serious vintages and selections.
The grape also yields a structured, sinewy rosé — more approachable yet anything but slight — common in Taburno and Vulture.

A tavolaAt the table

This is a serious red for the table. Its tannin and structure pair with rich, savoury dishes: braised beef, roast lamb, Sunday's Neapolitan ragù, meat off the grill. Its freshness stands up to long-aged cheeses too, such as a caciocavallo podolico or a mature pecorino. When young, it sits well with grilled red meats.

CuriositàDid you know

The Barolo of the South” is more than a catchy line: like Nebbiolo, Aglianico ripens very late, has tannin and acidity to spare and ages for decades. Its name is traditionally traced to hellenico, “Greek”, recalling the colonists of Magna Graecia: it is the most popular theory, though not a settled one — other readings link it to Romance forms that arrived under Aragonese rule. Not to be confused with Aglianicone, which despite the name is a distinct variety.
