Vermentino di Gallura: il bianco del ventoVermentino di Gallura: the wine of the wind

L'unica DOCG della Sardegna, dai graniti della GalluraSardinia's only DOCG, from the granites of Gallura

You might call it the wine of the wind. Vermentino di Gallura is Sardinia's only DOCG, born on the crumbling granites of the island's north-east, where the mistral bends the Mediterranean scrub and the sea is never far. A saline, straightforward white with a marine character, closing on the unmistakable signature of Vermentino: that elegant return of bitter almond that makes it recognisable almost with your eyes closed.

In colour it is pale straw yellow with greenish reflections, clear and luminous. On the nose it is intense and clean: crisp citrus — grapefruit, citron — and white flowers open onto a herbaceous base of Mediterranean scrub — myrtle, helichrysum — with a briny mineral note that recalls the nearby sea. On the palate it is fresh and savoury, with good structure for a white: the sip is taut and marine, with the characteristic almond finish, slightly bitterish but elegant. It is the freshness that keeps the sip lively and invites another, while the salinity lengthens the finish on the saline return. Overall it is a dry, medium-bodied white with good freshness and a clean palate: tension counts for more than weight, and that is what makes it so recognisable at the table.

La terra: granito, vento e mareThe land: granite, wind and sea

In this wine, everything begins with granite. The hills of Gallura are made of granitic rock that crumbles into pale, poor, well-drained sands: roots that struggle, modest yields, nervy and mineral wines. To this base add two decisive elements — the mistral, the north-westerly wind that dries the bunches and keeps disease at bay, and the nearness of the sea, which tempers the swings in temperature and returns in the glass as a saline imprint. The vineyards climb from the coast to the inland hills around Tempio Pausania, where altitude brings wider day-night temperature shifts and tauter aromatics. Closer to the coast the wines come out broader and more immediate; climbing toward the inland hills they gain nerve, definition and a sharper salinity. These are traits you find in the glass: a Mediterranean climate and full sun, yet no opulence — the keynote stays tension.

Il vitigno e la denominazioneThe grape and the appellation

A Mediterranean grape of uncertain, probably Iberian origin, Vermentino reached Sardinia by way of Corsica; you also find it in Liguria (as Pigato) and Piedmont (as Favorita), but it is in Gallura that it found its most celebrated expression. Here the bond with the land was sealed early: DOC in 1975, then DOCG in 1996, the island's first and still only guaranteed appellation. The production code reserves the name for wines made of at least 95% Vermentino, and alongside the base version it allows a more structured Superiore, made from riper grapes, plus less common styles — frizzante, sparkling, late harvest and passito. The denomination was built above all by the co-operatives of the granite heartland — Tempio Pausania, Monti, Calangianus — which made Vermentino the local house wine; alongside them, from the 1980s, a few ambitious estates raised the bar and carried Gallura onto tables beyond the island. Above all it remains a white to drink young, to catch its salty freshness, though the best labels can hold a few years.

A tavolaAt the table

A fresh, saline white, it is one of the most versatile partners for seafood. Its acidity lightens fried food and richer dishes, while its salinity accompanies briny sea flavours without covering them. Perfect with spaghetti with grey mullet bottarga, fregola with clams, raw fish and seafood, grilled fish and Catalan-style lobster; the broader Superiore also stands up to a langoustine risotto or a hearty fish soup.

Vermentino di Gallura is one of the most recognisable Mediterranean whites: immediate, saline and taut, with that almondy signature that gives it character and sets it apart. Not a wine for meditation, but the ideal companion to a seafood table — and one of the most pleasant ways to understand what Sardinia can do in the glass.
