At Sierra de la Ballena, fifteen kilometres from the ocean, a hillside winery bet on Uruguay's flagship grape.

In Uruguay wine has a name, and that name is Tannat. But at Sierra de la Ballena, in the hills of Maldonado, a small winery chose to grow it where almost no one else did: about fifteen kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, where the salt breeze changes the rules of the game.

In the late 1990s they left the city to look for good vineyard land near the coast, and found it in Sierra de la Ballena, the Maldonado ridge where whales are spotted in winter. They bought the plot in 2000 and planted the first vines in 2001.

So Alto de la Ballena was born: about eight hectares of vines on a twenty-hectare estate, among slopes of granite and schist. Higher up the soil is poor and stony, lower down it turns rich and chalky — two different characters in the same vineyard. Alongside Tannat grow Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, but it is the first grape that carries the house's identity.

It is a small, limited-production estate that opens its doors to visitors, and one of the first to bet on these hills, back when Maldonado was not yet wine country. Today the winery is also a stop for anyone reaching Punta del Este who wants to understand this coastal strip up close, between a tasting and a walk through the vines.

Perché il Tannat, e perché quiWhy Tannat, and why here

Tannat reached Uruguay around 1870, brought by Basque immigrants — above all Pascual Harriague — from the Madiran and Irouléguy areas of south-west France. Here it found a second home: today it is the country's flagship grape and accounts on its own for about 26.5% of Uruguay's vineyards, over 1,500 hectares. No other country grows so much of it relative to its total planted area.

It is not an easy grape, though: the thick skins and abundant seeds give it a commanding tannin and a very dense colour, often rough in its youth. Choosing Atlantic Maldonado is precisely a way to tame it. The ocean's influence brings cool air and milder nights, ripening is slower and more even, and the result is a Tannat that keeps its dark substance but gains in finesse. That is why this coastal strip — alongside the historic heartland of Canelones — is emerging as one of the new directions for Uruguayan Tannat.

Nel bicchiereIn the glass

In the glass the Tannat of these hills shows a dense ruby red, almost impenetrable when young. The nose is intense: dark berry fruit, blackberry and plum, framed by a spicy edge of pepper and liquorice and, on the oak-aged wine, a touch of cocoa and tobacco. When young it asks for air in the glass, and it ages slowly and well.

On the palate it has structure and a robust tannin, as befits the variety; but the freshness brought by the Atlantic lends it acidity and drive, so it stays savoury and long without turning heavy. The winery makes both a pure Tannat, sterner and worth waiting for, and its signature wine: a Tannat rounded off by a dash of Viognier, the aromatic white grape that softens its weave and lifts its perfume, with a hint of apricot and flowers.

A tavolaAt the table

This is a red born for the meat table, the one Uruguay calls asado. With rib steak and grilled chorizo the fat of the meat softens the tannin and turns it velvety, while the wine's freshness clears the palate between one bite and the next.

It handles roast lamb and beef stews just as well — rich, savoury dishes that the wine's structure supports. And with a hard, aged cheese its freshness answers the intense flavour and invites the next sip. Even the staples of the Uruguayan table — meat-filled empanadas, a board of cured meats — find in it a solid companion.
