In Pinto Bandeira, in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, a family of Venetian descent makes sparkling wine the Champagne way: the same patience, the same grapes, a subtropical sky. The winery is called Valmarino, after the hill village their ancestors left more than a century ago.

The Serra Gaúcha is the cradle of Brazilian wine. From 1875 onwards tens of thousands of Italian farmers — mostly from the Veneto and Trentino — arrived here fleeing poverty: they founded Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and Nova Milano, and brought with them the vine and the habit of making wine at home. The colonies became towns, the rows spread over the hills, and over the past few decades the region has found its most recognisable calling: sparkling wine.
Pinto Bandeira, just north of Bento Gonçalves, is its heart. The vineyards sit at around six to seven hundred metres, on dark basalt soil; the altitude brings cool nights even under a subtropical sky, and that gap between day and night preserves in the grapes the acidity and aromas a sparkling wine needs. Fittingly, since 2010 the area has had its own geographical indication, and today a denomination of origin designed specifically for the traditional method.
The Salton family came from Cison di Valmarino, a village in the hills of Treviso — the very hills of Prosecco Superiore. They emigrated to Brazil in 1878, like so many other families from the area. More than a century later, in 1997, Orval Salton and his three sons — Marco Antônio, Guilherme and Rodrigo — decided to do it properly: a small estate in Pinto Bandeira, little more than a handful of hectares, and a winery named to recall the village they had left.
It is an artisanal operation, the kind where the family sees to almost everything itself. The entry-level range carries a name that is already a dedication: «Tre Fradéi», the three brothers in Venetian dialect. But the house's signature lies elsewhere, in the bottles that rest for years on the lees. And there is something circular about this story: having left the land of Prosecco, the Saltons in Brazil took the opposite road — not the tank, but a second fermentation in the bottle.
Perché il metodo tradizionaleWhy the traditional method
Un grande spumante chiede acidità e finezza, e su queste montagne l'uva le porta con sé.The grapes are the classic sparkling ones: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a touch of Riesling Italico. Choosing the traditional method — the same prise de mousse as Champagne and Trentodoc — is no affectation here, but what the altitude of Pinto Bandeira allows. Great sparkling wine calls for acidity and finesse, and on these mountains the fruit brings them along.
The rest is done by time. The flagship sparkling wines rest on the lees for a long while, forty or fifty months, and from that long wait come the bready aromas and the fine, creamy texture of the mousse. These are dry bottles, often with no dosage, that hide nothing behind sugar: a way of making wine that asks for patience and allows no shortcuts.
Nel calice, e a tavolaIn the glass, and at the table
In the glass it is a bright straw yellow, run through by a fine, persistent mousse. The nose offers citrus and apple, a hint of white flowers, and that yeasty, bready note that betrays the months spent in the cellar. On the palate it is taut and fresh, with a fine savoury thread and a dry, clean finish: a sparkling wine of nerve rather than softness.
At the table it is versatile, as dry sparkling wines tend to be. It goes well with raw fish and shellfish, lightens fried food and battered vegetables, and accompanies a seafood risotto without smothering it. And to stay in the spirit of the Serra Gaúcha, try it with a board of cheeses and cured meats like those the immigrants carried all the way down here.
