Rare and unmistakable, Ruchè is the aromatic red of the Asti Monferrato: it smells of rose and spice like few Italian reds, yet on the palate it stays soft and approachable. Almost lost, it owes its revival to the stubbornness of a country priest.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Ruchè lives in a small patch of hills: seven villages of the Asti Monferrato — Castagnole Monferrato, Grana, Montemagno, Portacomaro, Refrancore, Scurzolengo and Viarigi. These are soils of Astian sands, loose calcareous marine sediments, on low south-facing hills: poor, free-draining ground that lends finesse and the perfumed profile that is the grape's signature. Outside this tiny area Ruchè is almost absent — and it is precisely this concentration that makes it one of Piedmont's rarities.
It is the only denomination built entirely on this grape: here, on the sands of Castagnole and the neighbouring villages, Ruchè finds the microclimate and soil that lift its aroma. Recognised as DOC in 1987 and DOCG in 2010, it is among the smallest in Italy by area.

A tavolaAt the table
Ruchè is a versatile red at the table: perfumed yet gentle in tannin, it accompanies without overpowering. It sits well with Piedmontese starters, from vitello tonnato to cured meats, and pairs with traditional first courses such as agnolotti and tajarin with ragù. It works with white meats and lighter roasts, and holds up to medium-aged cheeses like toma. Thanks to its spicy side, it is one of the few Italian wines to handle aromatic and Middle Eastern cooking, too.

CuriositàDid you know
Ruchè owes its survival to a priest. In the 1960s Don Giacomo Cauda, newly arrived in Castagnole Monferrato, recovered the old, all-but-abandoned vines and began to vinify them: the proceeds of the 'priest's wine' helped support the parish and the village rest home. From that gesture the denomination flourished again, and to this day one of the historic vineyards is named Vigna del Parroco. The origin of the name remains uncertain: some tie it to the hillside rocche (crags), others to a legendary import from Burgundy — neither has been proven.
