There is a white that grows in the land of great reds: Nascetta, the rare, ancient grape of Novello, saved from oblivion in the 1990s. Semi-aromatic and nervy, it weaves together wild herbs, citrus and honey, with an acidity that lets it age for years — uncommon for a Langhe white.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Nascetta is at home in the Langhe, in southern Piedmont, in the province of Cuneo, with its historic epicentre in the village of Novello, deep in the Langa del Barolo. It grows on the same hills as the great reds — alongside Nebbiolo — but favours the calcareous-marl soils (the Sant'Agata marls) that sustain its freshness. Beyond Novello it is found in other Langhe villages, from Monforte d'Alba to Serralunga and Dogliani, where it yields Langhe Nascetta. It remains a rare, tightly bound white, an exception in a land devoted to Nebbiolo.
It is here, in the single village of Novello, that Nascetta gives its best: 100% varietal, at contained yields, from grapes grown where the variety was born. The sub-zone, recognised in 2010, is its most rigorous and territorial expression.

A tavolaAt the table
Its freshness and savoury streak make it a Piedmontese white for the whole meal. It accompanies the classic antipasti — vitello tonnato, hand-cut raw veal, Russian salad —, sits well with delicate first courses such as buttered tajarin and agnolotti, and pairs with mixed fried plates and fresh cheeses like robiola and tomini. The fuller versions can also handle white meats and fish.

The grape is documented far back: Count Rovasenda noted it in his papers as "a most delicate grape and an exquisite wine", and in 1895 Lorenzo Fantini ranked it, for finesse of flavour, just behind the moscatello — the Moscato of those same hills — among the whites capable of giving "luxury wines". Nearly lost in the 20th century, it survived in a few scattered vines among the rows of red grapes until, from the 1990s, a group of Novello growers — with the University of Turin — brought it back to life; entered in the National Register in 2001, it now has an appellation of its own. The genetic studies coordinated by Anna Schneider place it within the Piedmontese group, close to the minor cultivars of the Saluzzo area or the Roero, without its precise origin having been established; the old comparison with Sardinian Nasco, by contrast, is ruled out beyond doubt — an entirely distinct grape. With age it develops hydrocarbon notes reminiscent of a mature Riesling: a likeness of style, not of kinship.
