Sonoma Coast AVA: i vini che crescono sotto la nebbia del PacificoSonoma Coast AVA: the wines that grow under the Pacific fog

Sonoma Coast AVA · CaliforniaSonoma Coast AVA · California

Pinot Nero e Chardonnay ne escono freschi e sapidi.North of San Francisco the ocean stays cold all year and fog rolls in through the valleys every morning: the grapes ripen slowly, well into October. The Sonoma Coast AVA, established in 1987, covers a very wide area, and since 2022 its truly coastal part has had a name of its own. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come out fresh and savoury here.

Il profiloThe profile

ColoreColour
The Pinot Noir is a medium-intensity ruby red, often translucent; the Chardonnay a clear, bright straw yellow.
NasoNose
Intense and fine: on the red, raspberry, cherry and a floral note, with forest-floor nuances behind; on the white, citrus, orchard fruit and, where oak is used, a hint of hazelnut.
BoccaPalate
Fresh and savoury in both colours: the Pinot Noir is light-bodied with fine, moderate tannin; the Chardonnay is fairly soft yet taut, closing with real persistence.

Sonoma County faces the Pacific, and here the ocean stays cold even at the height of summer: when the wind blows along the shore it pushes surface water away and colder water rises from below, the coastal upwelling described by the US ocean service. The moist air passing over it condenses, and becomes the fog that enters the valleys and the gaps between the hills every morning. This fog slows ripening well into October, and explains why a sunny region like California gives wines of this freshness. The ridges of the Coastal Ranges rise above a thousand feet, a little over three hundred metres: above that height the vines sit above the fog layer, while lower down the ridges create pockets sheltered from the heaviest fog. The bedrock is largely sedimentary rock of the Franciscan Complex, hard to erode, which supports steep slopes and gives thin, very sandy, free-draining soils. The name, though, covers far more than the coast. Sonoma Coast was recognised in 1987 and its boundary starts at the Mendocino County line, follows the ocean down to the Marin County line, then San Pablo Bay, and climbs back up to the Napa County line: the same words on a label can cover vines a stone's throw from the surf and vines well inland, where the climate is something else entirely. To give the real coast a name of its own, June 2022 brought the West Sonoma Coast: 141,846 acres lying entirely within Sonoma Coast, containing the small Fort Ross-Seaview, established in January 2012. At recognition it counted around 47 commercial vineyards over little more than a thousand planted acres. The two reference varieties are the same everywhere: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which the area's petitioners put forward as suited to this cool climate; Syrah remains marginal. It is worth remembering that an American viticultural area is not a European production code: it draws a boundary and stops there. It does not say which grapes to plant, and sets no yields, alcohol levels or ageing periods; it only asks that at least 85% of the grapes come from inside the line and that the wine be finished in the State. The rest is up to the grower. Giving the differences a precise name is part of the work of the people who live here: Lester and Linda Schwartz, who planted on the terraces above the sea at Jenner, played a part in the recognition of Fort Ross-Seaview and founded the area's growers' association, as their winery recounts.

They call for dishes of medium intensity, simple cooking and good ingredients.

When the fruit really comes from the ridges above the sea, this coast gives exactly what you hope for: freshness. The Pinot Noir is slender and perfumed, the Chardonnay taut and long, and both are at their best in their early years, when the aromas are clearest. Open them with a serious fish dish or a risotto.

This is the typical, recurring profile of the appellation, not the tasting of a single vintage or producer. The Sonoma Coast AVA is very large and styles vary between the ridges above the ocean and the inland sections; since 2022 the coastal part has its own appellation, the West Sonoma Coast.
