For a long time it was Champagne's 'workhorse' grape, hidden in blends. Yet Pinot Meunier is one of the region's three main grapes and covers about a third of its vineyards: it buds late and so escapes spring frosts, ripens early and brings fruit, roundness and immediate charm to the glass. Today more and more growers vinify it on its own, and beyond France it becomes a frank, fruity red in Germany and Australia.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Its homeland is Champagne, and the Vallée de la Marne in particular: cooler, clay-rich, frost-prone sites where its late budding is an asset. In Germany it is Schwarzriesling (or Müllerrebe), a Württemberg speciality — the region has around 1,200 hectares, the bulk of Germany's plantings of the grape — made as red and rosé. It is also found in Australia — where nineteenth-century vines survive at Great Western — in England for sparkling wine, and in small amounts in California. In Italy it remains a curiosity, all but absent from the vineyards.
In the Vallée de la Marne, Meunier finds cool soils and a climate that rewards its early ripening: fragrant, supple, ready wines that soften and open up Champagne blends. It is one of the three main grapes and, increasingly, the star of all-Meunier cuvées.

A tavolaAt the table
As a sparkling it's a classic aperitif and sits well with fried fish, sushi and mild cured meats: its freshness and bubbles cut through rich, oily food. As a light red, served slightly chilled, it accompanies charcuterie, mushrooms and white meats. Its gentle tannin makes it easy for everyday meals too.

CuriositàDid you know
The name comes from the French 'meunier', miller: the young leaves are covered in a white down that looks like a dusting of flour. Genetically it's a mutation of Pinot — a 'layered' plant whose two cell tissues differ — which is why it's treated as a variety in its own right. It has been documented since the 16th century.
