Il Pelaverga Piccolo vive quasi per intero su un fazzoletto di colline attorno a Verduno, con piccole estensioni a La Morra e Roddi: una trentina abbondante di ettari rivendicati, un'enclave dentro il feudo del Barolo. Pelaverga Piccolo lives almost entirely on a patch of hills around Verduno, with small extensions in La Morra and Roddi: a good thirty-odd registered hectares, an enclave inside the realm of Barolo. It favours the cool slopes and the calcareous marl soils that, at Verduno, refine its aromas without dulling them; beyond here it effectively does not exist.

La sua leggerezza e quel pepe bianco lo rendono un rosso di tutti i giorni, da servire leggermente fresco. Sta benissimo sugli antipasti piemontesi — vitello tonnato, carne cruda battuta al coltello, salame cotto — e accompagna gli agnolotti del plin e le paste con sughi delicati. Con i suoi tannini lievi non teme i tomini e le robiole fresche, e si sposa con le carni bianche e il bollito non troppo ricco. Da evitare i brasati e gli arrosti importanti, che lo coprirebbero.Its lightness and that white pepper make it an everyday red, best served slightly cool. It is wonderful with Piedmontese antipasti — vitello tonnato, hand-cut beef tartare, cooked salame — and accompanies agnolotti del plin and pasta with delicate sauces. With its light tannins it is at ease with fresh tomini and robiola cheeses, and pairs well with white meats and a not-too-rich bollito. Steer clear of braised meats and substantial roasts, which would smother it.

Questo è il Pelaverga Piccolo di Verduno; nel Saluzzese cresce il Pelaverga grosso (o di Pagno), un'altra varietà, che dà i vini delle Colline Saluzzesi. Il timbro di pepe bianco del Verduno nasce dal rotundone, la stessa molecola che impronta il Syrah e il Grüner Veltliner. Quasi estinto nel dopoguerra, il vitigno fu recuperato negli anni Settanta e ottenne la DOC nel 1995: nel 2025 la denominazione ha festeggiato i suoi primi trent'anni. Il nome, secondo l'interpretazione più accreditata, verrebbe dal latino pellis virga, dall'antica pratica di «pelare» in parte i tralci per favorire la maturazione delle uve.Beware the shared name: there are two «Pelaverga» grapes, genetically distinct. This is the Pelaverga Piccolo of Verduno; in the Saluzzo area grows the Pelaverga grosso (or di Pagno), another variety, which gives the wines of the Colline Saluzzesi. Verduno's white-pepper note comes from rotundone, the same molecule that marks Syrah and Grüner Veltliner. Almost extinct after the war, the grape was rescued in the 1970s and earned its DOC in 1995: in 2025 the denomination celebrated its first thirty years. The name, by the most accepted reading, is said to come from the Latin pellis virga, from the old practice of partly «peeling» the shoots to help the grapes ripen.
