To many it is simply «the Campanian white to drink chilled», yet Falanghina is much more: an ancient grape that carries the Latin vine-stake, the falanga, in its very name, and that today lives in two genetically distinct souls — the inland one of the Sannio and the volcanic one of the Campi Flegrei.

Dove cresceWhere it grows
Falanghina is among Campania's signature white grapes, yet the name covers two distinct varieties. The Beneventana type dominates the inland hills of the Sannio, around the Taburno massif; the Flegrea type grows on the sandy, volcanic soils of the Campi Flegrei, between Naples and Pozzuoli, reaching into the Caserta area and part of Molise. Ampelographic studies and DNA analysis have shown that the two, though they share a name, are not related: same christening, different vines and profiles.
On the inland hills of the Sannio, at the foot of the limestone Taburno massif, wide day-to-night temperature swings preserve aroma and acidity. Here the Beneventana type signs its most complete version: taut and savoury when young, yet able to gain in the bottle a body and complexity that surprise anyone who thinks of it as just «a summer white».

A tavolaAt the table
A wine of the sea and of the everyday table. Its freshness and savouriness go with fried small fish and seafood, stand up to spaghetti with clams and peppered mussels, and counterpoint buffalo mozzarella and fresh cheeses. With the more structured versions, try a baked fish or a fish soup.

CuriositàDid you know
The name comes from the Latin falanga, the stake that held up the shoots: a farming detail turned into a christening. Some dream of a link to Falernum, Rome's most celebrated wine — a charming idea, but unproven. A genuine curiosity, instead, lies in the Campi Flegrei: on the volcanic sands phylloxera struggles to take hold, so old ungrafted vines survive, just as they were before the disease that ravaged Europe's vineyards in the late 1800s.
