The town of Vittoria was born with the vine. In the early seventeenth century the countess of Modica, Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, founded it on the plain between the rivers Ippari and Dirillo and, to populate it, gave the first seventy-five settlers a hectare of land on condition that they planted another one with vines: the pact is recounted in the appellation's own rulebook. But wine here is far older. Settlers from Syracuse founded Kamarina at the mouth of the Ippari in the sixth century BC, and in this territory a rolled lead sheet was unearthed — a deed of sale from the third century BC — by which a woman who ran a wine shop bought a plot already planted with vines. The Romans called this land Plaga Mesopotamium, the plain between the two rivers.

The lightness of this red, by contrast, is no recent fashion: it is the result of a choice made more than a century ago. Until the late nineteenth century the area shipped dark, alcoholic wines to France, destined for blending; then came phylloxera and the trade war with France, that market closed, and the cellars turned to wines for drinking with a meal, of more moderate strength, fragrant and fresh. The rulebook calls them, in so many words, the forerunners of today's Vittoria DOC wines: varietal Frappato is the direct heir of that change of course. Then there is the soil. Half the land in the zone is red earth formed on calcarenite bedrock: shallow, iron-rich sands resting on limestone. The roots reach down to that contact and there find — the rulebook explains it — a little coolness and moisture, which keeps ripening from stalling in the dry summer, when between June and August barely a millimetre of rain falls on the plain. In July and August, moreover, the gap between day and night reaches thirteen to fourteen degrees in the mid-hill band: it is from there, rather than from the rock, that Frappato's scent and acidity come. The pale colour, though, comes from the grape itself: thin skins and little colouring matter.

Qui la sigla in etichetta può cambiare: il vitigno no.Vittoria has two appellations, and they were born on the same day. On 13 September 2005 Cerasuolo di Vittoria — a DOC since 1973 — became a DOCG, the only one in Sicily, reserved for the blend of Nero d'Avola (50 to 70%) and Frappato (30 to 50%); the same decree created the Vittoria DOC, which gathers the varietal wines of the same zone, Frappato included. They are not two separate worlds: the DOCG rulebook lets the grower decide at harvest whether to claim Cerasuolo or the Vittoria DOC in its bottlings. Same vineyards, two roads. And one detail says a great deal about this corner of Sicily: some of the names that made Frappato known beyond the island — Arianna Occhipinti, COS — bottle their own varietal Frappato as Terre Siciliane IGT. Here the letters on the label may change: the grape does not.

A tavolaAt the table

Discreet tannin, lively acidity, measured alcohol: at the table this red moves like a white with character. It sits well with full-flavoured fish and with Sicilian cooking of vegetables and fried food — as long as it is served chilled.

A red of perfume rather than weight: strawberry and violet, a nimble sip, discreet tannin, a clean finish. Frappato di Vittoria asks only one thing, to be served chilled: then, on a summer evening, it accompanies full-flavoured fish and the vegetable and fried dishes of its island, where a white is usually poured.

Diversi Frappato in purezza della stessa zona escono, per scelta del produttore, come Terre Siciliane IGT.Typical, recurring profile of the appellation, not the tasting of a single vintage or a single producer. Do not confuse the two Vittorias: the Frappato described here is the varietal bottling of the Vittoria DOC (Frappato minimum 85%), while Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG is the blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato. Several varietal Frappato wines from the same zone are released, by the producer's own choice, as Terre Siciliane IGT.
