On Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano in Basilicata, a handful of hectares and a single wine.

In northern Basilicata, on the slopes of an extinct volcano, Aglianico gives some of its most convincing reds. At Barile, at the foot of Monte Vulture, a young woman chose not to sell her family's vineyard but to turn it into wine instead: a single label, from a single vineyard. This is the story of Elena Fucci and her small winery.

L'antico vulcanoThe ancient volcano

Monte Vulture rises to 1,326 metres at the northern edge of the province of Potenza. It is a long-extinct volcano: its main activity died out more than a hundred thousand years ago, and what the fire left behind are wooded cones, the Monticchio lakes set into two craters and, above all, the soil. Ash, lapilli and volcanic rock make for loose, free-draining ground, poor and stony: the vine struggles here, and for that very reason it yields concentrated fruit.

The other key is altitude. Many vineyards sit above 450 metres and climb past 600, where the nights stay cool even at the height of summer. Aglianico is a late grape that ripens slowly: here the harvest often comes at the end of October, sometimes in November, and that long wait sets both sugar and acidity in the fruit. The 'minerality' people speak of in these wines is a tasting descriptor — tension, salinity, finesse — not minerals travelling from rock to glass: the volcano's influence comes through the soil and climate where the vine grows, not the glass.

Elena Fucci's story begins with a sale that never happened. In the 1960s her grandfather Generoso had bought rows of vines in the Solagna del Titolo district, at Barile, at the foot of the volcano. For decades the family sold that fruit to others; then, around the year 2000, there was talk of selling the vineyard itself. The one who refused was Elena, then nineteen: rather than sell the grapes she decided to vinify them herself, and the estate was born with the 2000 harvest.

What came of it is a tiny, almost monastic winery: a few hectares, a single cru and — for years — a single wine. It is called 'Titolo', after the district, and it is pure Aglianico, from old vines planted by that same grandfather. The decision to focus on one high-altitude vineyard rather than expand is the heart of the project: fewer bottles, more identity.

Il carattere del vinoThe character of the wine

Aglianico del Vulture is a denomination with deep roots: a DOC since 1971, with its Superiore version raised to DOCG in 2010. In every form it is one hundred per cent Aglianico. In the glass it is a red built on firmness more than on flesh: deep ruby when young, turning garnet over the years; on the nose it brings dark fruit, withered violet, spice and, with age, notes of undergrowth and earth.

It is on the palate that you recognise it. The wine is tannic, with close-knit tannins that dry the mouth when young and ease with ageing, and above all it is fresh: a lively acidity, born of altitude, keeps it upright and gives it the breath to age for years. This is not an easy, early-drinking red but a wine of structure and patience, tending to be tauter and fresher than the Aglianico of the Campanian side.

A tavolaAt the table

A red like this, tannic and fresh, asks for hearty dishes. The classic local match is roast lamb with potatoes: the rich, savoury meat softens the tannins. It works just as well with cavatelli in a meat ragù, where the long, rich sauce meets the wine's acidity head on. For cheese, reach for an aged pecorino such as pecorino di Filiano: its hard, sharp paste stands up to the wine's structure. And to stay in Basilicata, it goes with the warm dishes of winter, from rustic pezzente sausage to a good braise.
