A white grape of the Canavese whose bright acidity is its signature. From one vineyard come a taut dry white, a classic-method sparkling and a golden sweet passito: few grapes lend themselves to three such different readings.
Il carattereThe character
Dove cresceWhere it grows
Erbaluce is the grape of the Canavese, the belt of hills north of Turin shaped by glaciers: the morainic amphitheatre of the Serra d'Ivrea, one of the largest in Europe, left sandy-gravelly soils, loose and well-drained. The cool, breezy climate preserves the grape's natural acidity, which here finds its taut, citrusy character.
Historically trained on the tall Canavese pergola, Erbaluce remains an almost entirely Piedmontese grape: beyond the Canavese it grows in the Colline Novaresi and the Coste della Sesia, while outside the region only a few experimental rows survive. It is a grape at home in one small patch of land, and that is exactly where it shines.
It is in the morainic amphitheatre around Caluso that Erbaluce reaches its fullest expression. The glacial soils and the marked day-to-night temperature swing heighten the grape's acidity and savouriness, which here takes three forms — the dry white, the classic-method sparkling and the passito — all from pure Erbaluce.

A tavolaAt the table
The dry white calls for the table of its own land: vegetable antipasti, fresh tomini and young goat's cheeses, lake and freshwater fish. Its lively acidity and savouriness clean the palate after fried food and pair well even with an intense dish like bagna cauda.
The classic-method sparkling opens the meal or partners a mixed fry; the passito, golden and sweet, is for the end — with amaretti and zabaione, or beside a blue cheese.

CuriositàDid you know
The name evokes the «light of dawn» and carries a legend of nymphs and love: a lovely tale, but tradition rather than record. What is certain is that Erbaluce already appears in the early 1600s in the writings of Giovan Battista Croce, jeweller and winegrower at the court of the House of Savoy — the sign of a grape grown in the Canavese for centuries.
We describe the typical, recurring character of Erbaluce and its wines, not a single vintage: interpretations and styles vary from winery to winery.
