Lattina, bag-in-box, Tetra Pak: il vino fuori dalla bottigliaCan, bag-in-box, Tetra Pak: wine beyond the bottle

Tre contenitori a confronto — cosa fa davvero la differenzaThree containers compared — what actually makes the difference

Capire come funziona ciascun formato aiuta a scegliere meglio, senza pregiudizi.Pouch, box, metal tin: wine now comes in many shapes. But does the container actually change the taste? The short answer is yes — not because it adds anything, but because it controls how much oxygen and light reach the wine. Understanding how each format works helps you choose wisely, without prejudice.

Before a bottle — or a can — is even opened, the wine has already spent months inside its container. What determines whether it arrives at the glass in good shape is mainly how much oxygen manages to seep through the walls and closure. Too much exposure triggers oxidation: fruity aromas flatten, colour shifts, freshness fades. Light adds another layer of risk: photo-oxidation can alter aromatic compounds within minutes, especially in the UV range. That's why opaque containers — can, bag-in-box, multi-layer carton — start with an advantage over clear glass: no sunlight reaches the wine. But oxygen protection varies considerably across formats, and this is where the story gets more interesting.

Bag-in-box works on a simple and effective principle: the wine lives inside a multi-layer plastic pouch that collapses as you pour, letting no air in. After opening, the wine stays shielded from oxygen for two to three weeks — a performance no ordinary bottle can match once uncorked. The outer box blocks light. This makes it ideal for ready-to-drink wines consumed at home in small pours through the week: a crisp white, a summer rosé, a fruity everyday red. It's not a format designed for ageing — serious structured reds stay in glass — but for wines made for it, it performs better than most people expect. The Italian market is rediscovering it, driven partly by growing interest in packaging sustainability.

La lattina: barriera perfetta, ma il rivestimento contaThe can: a perfect barrier — if the lining holds up

Non è pensata per un rosso importante che ha bisogno di aprirsi per qualche ora prima di dare il meglio di sé.Metal blocks both light and oxygen: on those two parameters the can is the container that protects most. The potential issue, if there is one, lies inside. The metal surface in direct contact with wine could alter its aromas, so every can is lined with a thin internal film. The quality of that lining matters: if it fails, the wine reaches the bare metal and reductive off-odours can develop. The lining can also retain a few aroma molecules — the phenomenon known as flavour scalping — but research finds it marginal for most of the wine's aromas. Quality-focused producers invest in high-grade liners, and in carefully made products the problem is rare. Cans suit young, fragrant, ready-to-drink wines: a fresh Vermentino, a fruity rosé, a light sparkling served cold. They are not designed for a serious red that needs a few hours open to show its best.

Tetra Pak e cartone: il grande classico silenziosoTetra Pak and carton: the quiet classic

In Italy, carton-packaged wine has deep roots. The carton sits at the base of the supermarket wine pyramid, the format for everyday table buying: within the carton category alone, the Caviro group — the one behind Tavernello — accounts for 40.7% of the volumes sold (IRI data, year ending August 2020). Brands like Tavernello, Caldirola or Cevico built an entire mass-market on this technology. Multi-layer carton — with its aluminium and polyethylene barriers — is opaque and protects well from light. Shelf life after opening is shorter than bag-in-box, however: every pour lets in a small amount of air and oxidation begins sooner. It's the everyday wine format by definition: affordable, practical, recyclable. It doesn't promise complexity and doesn't pretend to deliver it, but for a glass without grand expectations, it does the job honestly.

La risposta onesta: sì, cambia — ma dipende dal vinoThe honest answer: yes, it changes — but it depends on the wine

The container really does shape the wine experience — just not in the way people fear. There's no intrinsically superior format: there's the right match between wine, container and occasion. A Primitivo in a can enjoyed cold on a summer afternoon doesn't ask to be compared with the traditional bottle; a structured, age-worthy red has no reason to leave glass. What genuinely makes the difference, in every case, is the quality of the wine itself: no container rescues a poor wine, and no alternative container automatically damages a good one. The most useful question, in the end, isn't 'is the bottle better?' — it's 'do this wine and this container work together for what I want from them?'
