Albariño delle Rías Baixas: la brezza atlantica nel caliceRías Baixas Albariño: the Atlantic breeze in the glass

Il bianco galiziano da un solo Albariño, dove il mare entra nella terraGalicia's white from a single Albariño, where the sea reaches into the land

Facing the Atlantic, in the north-western corner of Spain, Galicia signs with Albariño a taut, briny white: citrus, white flowers and a freshness that smells of the ocean. The Rías Baixas — the inlets where the sea reaches into the land — are its home, and in the "Rías Baixas Albariño" mention the wine is born from Albariño grapes only.

In colour it is straw yellow with greenish reflections, brilliant. On the nose it is intense and fine: citrus (grapefruit, lime), white flowers and peach, over a herbaceous base and an iodine note that recalls the sea. On the palate it is fresh and savoury, with body, taut acidity and a persistent finish, closing on a slightly almondy note. Drunk young it keeps all its freshness, but lees-aged versions add depth and structure.

Galicia is "green Spain": abundant rain, hills covered in vines, and those deep inlets — the rías — where the ocean climbs up between the heights. It is here that Albariño gives its best. Its historic cradle is Val do Salnés, around Cambados, where granitic, sandy soils and a cool, damp climate shape a nervy, fragrant white. Here the sea is not a backdrop: it tempers the extremes. Atlantic breezes soften the temperature swings and dry the bunches in a land where rain never fails. That is why the vine has traditionally been trained on pergolas, on granite posts — the emparrado —, lifting the clusters off the ground and exposing them to the wind. Albariño is a thick-skinned grape with a marked aromatic profile, able to keep its acidity alive even at full ripeness. For a long time it remained an almost local variety; the recognition of the Denominación de Origen Rías Baixas, in 1988, made it one of Spain's best-known whites in the world. The appellation counts five subzones — Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla — and behind it lies a mosaic of small, fragmented vineyards, worked by families and cooperatives: the hand of man that, vine by vine, turned a village grape into a recognisable identity.

A tavolaAt the table

Freshness and taut acidity, marked savouriness: Albariño was born for the seafood table. It cleanses the palate of briny flavours and lightens fried dishes and sauces, without ever covering the plate. Perfect with oysters and raw shellfish, Galician octopus (pulpo á feira) with paprika and oil, fried fish and grilled sardines, gratinated scallops.

An Atlantic white, food-friendly and direct: its strength is briny freshness, not power. Drink it young, with seafood, when the acidity is liveliest; yet lees-aged versions show that Albariño can also wait. It is the white that introduced Galicia to drinkers around the world, without giving up its character poised between land and ocean. A wine that brings the ocean into the glass — and makes you crave a seafood table.
